Curiously, the people in the best position to see it look at it directly only half the time. The other half of the time they look at it on the screens of their camera-phones. Then they inspect the photos they took, discard some of them, and take more. Hawkers move through the crowd, selling postcards and fridge magnets. The overall impression is that the clock is a wonderful thing, but that it must compete against a simulacra of itself for the attention it deserves.
